Derrick Lewis Forced to Withdraw from UFC Edmonton Due to Medical Issue
Former UFC heavyweight title challenger Derrick Lewis, renowned for his powerful knockout ability and holding the promotion’s all-time knockout record with 15 victories, was unexpectedly withdrawn from his scheduled bout at the UFC Edmonton event last night in Canada.
The reason for Lewis’ withdrawal? A perplexing “medical issue” that kept “The Black Beast” sidelined just hours before his fight.
Medical Mystery Looms Over Lewis’ Absence
Lewis’ sudden exit from the fight card wasn’t the first time the heavyweight contender has faced last-minute setbacks. Promoter Sean Shelby shed light on the situation, explaining, “He had to cut a little bit but it’s not uncommon for him.” He added, “And then, over the course of the afternoon, he started to get the medical treatment and we just didn’t have any answers. So at that point, it made more sense for us to proceed with the weigh-ins with Diniz and try to figure out what was going on before making any decisions. But there is no substitute to taking the safe road when it comes to athlete health and safety. So it was the right decision to not compete.”
Lewis’ opponent, Jhonata Diniz, was subsequently rebooked to face Marcin Tybura at UFC 309.
