Indonesia to investigate Police Response to Protests
Head of Presidential Interaction Office Hasan Nasbi responded to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) insistence on a thorough examination into how Indonesian authorities handled recent demonstrations.
“The president has directed that any actions which are immeasurable, or exceed authority, must be examined. an order has already been given,” Hasan stated at the Ministry of Home Affairs Office in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
The OHCHR expressed concerns regarding the use of force against protestors and called for independent investigations into allegations of excessive force. They specifically highlighted incidents during demonstrations related to recent legislative changes and rising living costs.
nasbi affirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. He emphasized, though, that demonstrations must remain within the bounds of the law. “We respect the right to protest, but it cannot disrupt public order or endanger others,” he explained.
the investigation will focus on evaluating the actions of law enforcement officials during the protests. It will assess whether the force used was proportionate to the situation and if established protocols were followed. Findings will be made public, and appropriate action will be taken against any officers found to have acted improperly.
This move comes amid increasing scrutiny of police conduct during protests in Indonesia. Human rights organizations have long called for greater accountability and clarity in law enforcement practices. The government’s decision to launch an investigation signals a willingness to address these concerns and ensure that the rights of citizens are protected.
