CMPD Launches “CROWN” Initiative to Combat Uptown Crime

Charlotte, NC. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) and Center City Partners announced on Wednesday, October 8, an intensive plan to reduce violent crime in the heart of the city, especially in the entertainment areas of Uptown.

The strategy, called “CROWN” (Center City’s Restoration of Order, Wellness, and Non-violence), seeks to restore order, well-being and non-violence in the area. CMPD will increase police patrols and enforce stricter controls in a half-mile radius around Trade and Tryon streets, known as “the square.”

Targeted patrols will focus on Romare Bearden Park, First Ward Park, Fourth Ward Park, The Square, and the Charlotte Transportation Center-areas that register high nighttime and leisure activity.

Residents should expect increased police presence and zero tolerance for disorder,” said Major Gene Lim of the CMPD.In addition, a new Entertainment District Unit will be responsible for directly addressing crimes associated with nightlife.

Although law enforcement will be stricter, authorities stressed that the approach seeks balance firmness with compassion, especially towards people facing homelessness or mental health crises.

The municipality has allocated $500,000 to support city-county collaboration on addressing homelessness. A funding proposal will be presented to the City Council to support these efforts.
