US Military Buildup in Bulgaria Signals Potential Action Against Iran
A significant deployment of US military aircraft to Bulgaria is raising concerns about potential military action against Iran. Seven US Air Force tanker aircraft are currently stationed at Sofia Airport, according to security analyst Milen Keremedchiev, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate.
Growing US Military Presence
The presence of the tanker aircraft, used for aerial refueling, suggests preparations for a potential large-scale air campaign. This deployment coincides with reports from CNN indicating that US forces are operationally ready, though President Donald Trump has not yet authorized any strikes. Other US media outlets describe the current military buildup in the Middle East as the largest since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
NATO Training Exercises Confirmed
The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the presence of the US Air Force aircraft, stating that they are participating in training exercises linked to NATO’s enhanced vigilance operations. According to a statement from the US Embassy in Bulgaria, the deployment is part of pre-positioned aircraft and equipment for Enhanced Vigilance Activities (eVA) in accordance with existing agreements.
Broader Military Movements
The buildup isn’t limited to Bulgaria. Tracking data from Flightradar24 shows a steady flow of US military aircraft, including Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy and Boeing C-17A Globemaster III transport planes, and Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker refueling planes, moving towards Europe and the Middle East since January 13th. Researchers like Steffan Watkins note a particularly active period of movement in recent days, suggesting the US has positioned much of what it needs for a large-scale attack or to defend Israel from potential retaliation.
Key Assets Deployed
Notably, E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control systems (AWACS) aircraft have been tracked leaving the US, a movement similar to that observed before Operation Midnight Hammer, the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites last year. The USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group is also en route to the region, joining the USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group, bringing the total number of US destroyers in the area to eleven.
Diplomatic Context
This military buildup follows a statement from President Trump on January 13th, offering support to Iranian protesters. Whereas the situation remains fluid, the increasing US military presence signals a heightened state of readiness and a potential willingness to take military action against Iran.
Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynski has requested information regarding the US aircraft and has pledged to provide updates as they become available.
