Severe Storms Threaten East Coast, Bringing Tornadoes, High Winds, and Blizzard Conditions
A sprawling storm system is unleashing chaotic weather across the United States, impacting over 100 million people from coast to coast. Whereas the West experiences an early heat wave, the East Coast braces for severe thunderstorms, potential tornadoes, and a rapid drop in temperatures.
Tornado Watches and Warnings Issued for Mid-Atlantic States
The National Weather Service has issued Tornado Watches and Warnings for parts of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia late Monday morning. A rapid-moving storm system is pushing across the metro area, with a particular threat in north-central Montgomery County in Maryland and parts of Rappahannock, Fauquier and Culpeper County in Virginia [FOX 5 DC].
At 11:46 a.m. EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Linganore-Bartonsville, near Frederick, Maryland, moving northeast at 55 mph. Another severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Boyds, or over Germantown, moving northeast at 50 mph [FOX 5 DC].
Potential impacts include dangerous flying debris, damage to roofs, siding, and windows, and potential destruction of mobile homes. Tree damage is also likely [FOX 5 DC].
Rare Level 4 out of 5 Severe Weather Risk
The East Coast faces a rare Level 4 out of 5 risk of severe weather, with widespread wind gusts approaching hurricane force. Storms are capable of producing strong, long-track EF-2+ tornadoes across parts of the Carolinas, north through Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. [Fox Weather]. The severe weather threat extends as far north as New York City [Fox Weather].
Travel Disruptions and School Closures
The storms have already caused significant travel disruptions, with more than 3,000 flights canceled nationwide on Monday. Many schools in the mid-Atlantic states have closed early. Airports in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta are experiencing delays and cancellations [WTOP].
The House of Representatives postponed votes due to travel difficulties caused by the inclement weather.
Blizzard Conditions in the Midwest
Parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are experiencing blizzard conditions, with as much as 2 feet of snow reported by morning. Another round of snow and gusty winds could nearly double those totals in upper Michigan.
Heat Wave in the West
A heat dome over the Southwest is pushing temperatures into the triple digits in Arizona, much earlier than usual. Much of California is also experiencing unusually warm temperatures, with the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento approaching 90°F by midweek.
Flooding and Landslides in Hawaii
Unrelenting rains have triggered landslides and flooded homes and farmland in Hawaii, particularly on Maui. Some areas of Maui received over 20 inches of rain, causing a coastal road to collapse [Times Now News].
Cold Air to Follow
Following the storms, sharply colder weather is expected to move into the East Coast. Wind chills below freezing are forecast to reach the Gulf Coast and the Florida Panhandle, with warnings in effect across the Southeast and parts of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.
