Escaped Monkeys with Diseases Prompt Police Chase in Mississippi

heidelberg,Mississippi (USA) – Police in Mississippi chased escaped monkeys from a research lab. They have caught all but one, but even this last monkey is a danger. Officials say the animal has sexually transmitted diseases and the COVID-19 virus, and it could be aggressive.

The situation started with a crash. On Tuesday, a truck near the small town of Heidelberg (population 718) had an accident. The truck was carrying a group of Rhesus monkeys.

The monkeys came from a medical research lab at Tulane University in New Orleans (USA). Researchers had been studying them with viruses like Hepatitis C, Herpes, and COVID-19, along with other germs. They were being moved to a new location when the accident happened.

After the crash, the monkeys ran into the woods. Local authorities and the university worked together to find them. They were worried about the public’s safety because of the diseases the monkeys carried.

Officials warned people not to approach the monkeys. They said the monkeys could transmit diseases to humans. They also warned that the monkeys might bite if they felt threatened.

by Thursday, officials had captured most of the monkeys. However, one remained at large. They continued their search, urging residents to be cautious and report any sightings.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is helping with the search and providing guidance on how to handle the situation. They are also monitoring for any potential spread of disease.

This incident raises questions about the safety of transporting animals used in research and the potential risks to the public. Tulane University is cooperating with the inquiry.
