NBA Takes Court in the Metaverse with AR ‘Tabletop’ Feature

The NBA is pushing the boundaries of fan engagement with a groundbreaking new feature for its Vision Pro app called "Tabletop." This augmented reality innovation transports a virtual basketball court straight into your living room, offering an immersive experience during select live games.

Available for subscribers of NBA League Pass, Tabletop uses digital avatars to recreate the action unfolding on the court, mirroring the movements, passes, and shots of real players. The feature is particularly exciting for local market games, as it provides a visual representation even when video streams are not available.

While I experienced a slight delay (around 45 seconds) during testing, Vision Pro user Justin Ryan reported being able to sync the AR experience with the live feed, minimizing the lag to just half a second.

Although each player currently shares the same avatar style, whether "robot-like" or a stylized cartoon, jerseys, names, and numbers ensure clear identification. The player with the ball even has their name displayed above their head, adding an extra layer of detail.

While the NBA hasn’t yet confirmed if Tabletop will be available for the upcoming NBA All-Star weekend, this alpha feature shows immense potential. The NBA has been actively exploring mixed reality advancements, with Commissioner Adam Silver recently showcasing a 3D scan of sports commentator Ahmad Rashad used to seamlessly integrate into game footage.

Tabletop’s success hinges on its ability to deliver a seamless and engaging viewing experience. With the rise of immersive technologies, it’s clear the NBA is leading the way in leveraging these innovations to connect fans with the sport in unprecedented ways.
