Gua Sha Massage Leaves Woman Feeling ‘Skinned Alive’ in Viral TikTok

Relaxation and stress relief are often the main goals of a massage. However, one woman’s experience at the spa took a painful turn, leaving her feeling anything but tranquil. In a viral TikTok video with over 894,400 views, user Kim’s Chronicles (@kimschronicals) took to the platform to warn others about a specific type of massage called Gua sha.

The Painful Experience

Kim alleges that the Gua sha massage was excruciating, leaving her with wounds that took days to heal. “For all of you people on this app that get massages, you need to know this,” she began in the clip. “Run for your life” if a massage therapist recommends Gua sha, she warned.

Kim described the experience as feeling like her back was “burning” and likened it to being “skinned alive.” Upon returning home, she discovered her back was pink and inflamed. She also expressed frustration over feeling pressured into trying Gua sha when she had originally only wanted a regular massage.

“Learn from my mistake,” she urged viewers. “Do not do what I did.”

What is Gua Sha?

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese treatment that involves scraping the skin with a tool to increase circulation. Practitioners believe that stagnant energy, called chi, can be broken up and dispersed, alleviating inflammation and other ailments.

Some studies support the potential benefits of Gua sha. One study found that it increased circulation for about 25 minutes, while another study reported reductions in muscle pain after treatment.

Is Gua Sha Safe?

While Gua sha is generally considered safe, it’s not without potential side effects. Healthline.com states that the treatment typically doesn’t hurt, but it can temporarily change the appearance of your skin.

The scraping action can cause tiny blood vessels in the skin (capillaries) to burst, resulting in redness or bruising that typically fades within a couple of days.

@kimschronicals I was skinned alive! Never do Gua Sha😩 One of the stupidest things I have ever done. #stupidity #guasha #painful #mass #run ♬ original sound – Kim’s Chronicles

Kim’s video sparked a range of reactions in the comments section. Some users shared their positive experiences with Gua sha, while others expressed concerns about its potential for pain and discomfort.

Before You Try Gua Sha

Before trying Gua sha, it’s essential to consult with a qualified practitioner and discuss your medical history. Be sure to communicate your pain tolerance and any concerns you may have.
