Woman Dies After collapsing at Boston Nightclub
An investigation is underway after a woman collapsed at Boston’s ICON nightclub early Sunday morning and later died, prompting the business to release a timeline of events. according to a Boston police report, officers patrolling near Warrington Street received a notification around 12:28 a.m. regarding an issue at ICON.
Officers were informed by a woman outside the building that her friend had collapsed on the dance floor and was not breathing. Upon entering, officers found a large crowd surrounding the woman, hindering access, the report stated. An ICON cashier, who is also an EMT, began performing chest compressions.
Police reported shutting down the venue because the crowd did not comply with requests to create space for Boston EMS. ICON disputes this claim. the woman was transported to Tufts Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to officials. Her identity has not yet been released.
The police report indicates the woman had consumed alcohol and smoked prior to the medical incident. Friends reportedly told officers she had a pre-existing heart condition.
In a statement,Club ICON expressed its sadness and stated it conducted an internal investigation,including a review of surveillance footage and staff interviews. “The Club has provided a timeline to law enforcement, the Licensing Board for the City of Boston, and the Mayor’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing,” a spokesperson said.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced the Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing immediatly suspended ICON’s entertainment license following the incident.
According to ICON’s timeline, the woman entered the establishment at 11:53 p.m. on Dec. 20. At 12:22 a.m., her sister alerted staff to a medical emergency on the dance floor. Staff arrived on scene at 12:23 a.m., alerted management, and began providing medical aid.
The first Boston police officer arrived at 12:28 a.m.”The video shows that the officers were not hindered in any way on their path to the victim,” the club spokesperson said. “Video shows staff helping with making pathway with cooperative patrons moving out of the way for the first responders.”
Boston EMS arrived at the dance floor at 12:35 a.m. “without delay or obstruction” and attended to the woman, ICON stated. She was transported from the venue to an ambulance at 12:45 a.m.
“We hope the family finds some comfort knowing that Boston Police, Boston EMS, and the Club Staff worked diligently and efficiently in responding to this unfortunate situation,” the club spokesperson said.
Club ICON previously stated: “Our staff responded immediately and called emergency services while an off-duty EMT rendered first aid. Police and medical personnel arrived on scene and the individual was transported to the hospital, where they later passed away. We are cooperating fully with all inquiries from law enforcement and city officials.”
