2026 Eid Homecoming Exodus: Peak Travel Night and Traffic Management Updates

Jakarta, Indonesia – The peak of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus occurred on Wednesday night, with approximately 250,000 vehicles departing from the capital city, according to Indonesian National Police (INP) Traffic Corps Chief Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho . This represents a significant increase compared to the 221,000 vehicles that left Jakarta on Tuesday.

Traffic Congestion and Management Strategies

The surge in travelers led to heavy traffic congestion, particularly on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road starting from kilometer 7. To manage the massive volume, authorities implemented a national “one-way” scheme from kilometer 70 to kilometer 414 .

Traffic Police have identified several factors contributing to the congestion, including vehicles exiting and entering rest areas, and occasional vehicle breakdowns . Authorities are working to manage traffic optimally and minimize disruptions.

Safety Measures and Traveler Advice

The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) is prioritizing the “Traffic Police Smile” program, deploying officers along major routes to assist drivers . Travelers are urged to utilize rest areas effectively and prioritize safety over speed. Korlantas Polri has also advised travelers to take a break every three hours to avoid fatigue .

Return Flow Anticipation

The peak of the return flow is now predicted for March 24th. Authorities are preparing traffic engineering measures to handle both the homecoming and return flows . Approximately 1.2 million vehicles have already left Jakarta for the Eid exodus .
