Toyota Unveils Ninth-Generation Hilux with ICE, BEV, and FCEV Options
Toyota Motor Thailand has launched the ninth-generation Hilux, dubbed the Hilux Travo in Thailand, at the 2026 Bangkok International Motor Show. The new pickup truck features a multi-pathway approach to mobility, offering internal combustion engine (ICE), battery electric vehicle (BEV), and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) variants to meet diverse customer needs across Asia.
Powertrain Options
All ICE Hilux variants are equipped with a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine (1GD-FTV) with a variable nozzle turbocharger and intercooler. This engine delivers a maximum of 204PS at 3,000-3,400rpm and 500Nm of torque when paired with a six-speed automatic transmission (AT). The manual transmission (MT) option is capped at 420 Nm of torque.
Hilux Travo-e: The All-Electric Variant
The all-electric variant, known as the Hilux Travo-e in Thailand, is powered by dual electric motors on the eAxles, producing a combined output of 196PS and 205Nm at the front and 269Nm at the rear. It features a 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack installed under the floor, providing an estimated cruising range of 315km (NEDC). The Travo-e supports DC fast charging up to 125kWh and AC charging at 10kWh. The battery is protected by Toyota’s shock-absorbing Diamond Guard subframe structure.
Enhanced Driving Experience
The new Hilux incorporates the Dynamic Cloud suspension system to improve handling, stability, and smoothness. It also features the 4WD “4Trex” system, which includes a diff-lock, Auto Limited Slip Differential, and Active Traction Control (A-TRC) as standard. Additional enhancements include increased body rigidity, refined suspension tuning, and Electric Power Steering (EPS).
Launch and Market Response
The world premiere of the new Hilux, including the BEV model, was held on November 10, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand, by Toyota Motor Asia (TMA). Toyota plans to launch the new Hilux sequentially from 2026 onward, with Japan-bound diesel models scheduled for mid-2026.
Toyota Motor Thailand President Noriaki Yamashita highlighted the Hilux’s importance in the Thai automotive market, noting that the Hilux Travo and Travo-e, along with the Land Cruiser FJ, represent Toyota’s contribution to the Thai automotive industry. Toyota achieved a 48.7% market share in the pickup segment in Thailand last year, thanks to the success of the Hilux Revo and Hilux Champ.
Pricing
In Thailand, conventional engine variants of the Hilux start at approximately 519,000 Baht (around IDR 220 million), with higher-end models like the Travo Overland reaching around IDR 480 million. The electric Hilux Travo-e starts at 1.491 million Baht (approximately IDR 650 million).
