Cases of colon or colorectal cancer are increasingly being found at a young age. This is due to an unhealthy lifestyle, especially daily eating patterns.
Nutrition specialist Dr. Juwalita Surapsari, MGizi, SpGK, revealed that a lack of fiber and vitamin intake from food could be the trigger. Because vegetables and fruit are foods that are rich in vitamins and sufficient fiber for the body.
“Now what is called dietary fiber, if you don’t get enough of it, there are various risks of disease. What are we most afraid of, is colon cancer,” explained Dr. Juwalita when met on the sidelines of the Health Corner event ‘Complete Nutrition, Tall and Fast Responsive Children’ at the Trans TV Building, Friday (13/2/2026).

“Now, people are starting to get older, you know, people aged 20-30 are also affected,” he continued.
One of the vitamins in vegetables is vitamin C. According to Dr. Juwalita, this will help the absorption of iron and antioxidants which prevent various diseases.
Even so, Dr. Juwalita emphasized that instilling the habit of eating fruit and vegetables should not be done by force. This can traumatize him, so he doesn’t want to eat anymore.
“Because there are two of my patients who are adults now, aged 23 and 27. He also can’t eat fruit. If he eats fruit, he says he’s disgusted. Well, when you’re an adult, it’s already difficult,” he said.
Based on initial data from free health checks, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) found five provinces with the largest populations at high risk of colon cancer, including Bali, Yogyakarta, West Java, Central Java, and East Java with 7.6 million people.
Head of the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s Health and Early Detection Working Team (KDI) Rindu Rachmiati SKM M Epid explained that colorectal cancer is a malignancy that originates from the tissue of the large intestine consisting of the colon, the longest part of the large intestine or the rectum, the last small part of the large intestine before the anus.
Quoting data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Rindu emphasized that colorectal cancer is one of the highest causes of death from cancer in Indonesia.
“The fifth highest cause of death in Indonesia. Colorectal death rates for men and women are not too different compared to, for example, women’s breast and cervical cancer. With a case prevalence of 12.1 and deaths of 6.6,” he explained some time ago.
