Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!”: A Gothic Romance Reimagining of Frankenstein

Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale star in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s bold new film, “The Bride!,” a reimagining of the classic “Bride of Frankenstein” story. The film, which premiered at the Empire Leicester Square in London on February 26, 2026, is scheduled for release in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 6, 2026.

A Modern Gothic Tale

“The Bride!” is set in 1930s Chicago and draws inspiration from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein and the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein. The story follows Frankenstein’s monster, who asks Dr. Euphronius to create a companion. Together, they bring to life a murdered woman, known as “the Bride,” sparking a romance, police investigation and social upheaval.

Cast and Creative Team

The film boasts a star-studded cast including Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz. Buckley plays Ida, Mary Shelley, and the Bride, whereas Bale portrays Frank, the creature.

Maggie Gyllenhaal wrote and directed the film, following her critically acclaimed directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter.” The creative team includes cinematographer Lawrence Sher, editor Dylan Tichenor, and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. The film is produced by First Love Films and In the Current Company.

Gyllenhaal’s Vision

Gyllenhaal described the film as a “wild, willfully over-the-top double-barreled reinvigoration” of the original Bride of Frankenstein. She noted the exclamation point in the title represents a breaking of silence and an explosion of life, particularly for women who have been suppressed. Gyllenhaal collaborated closely with Warner Bros. Co-chair and co-CEO Pam Abdy to refine the film, embracing feedback to ensure broader audience understanding and impact.

Buckley’s Triple Role

Jessie Buckley’s performance encompasses three roles: Ida, a Chicago socialite; Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein; and the Bride herself. Buckley described her collaboration with Gyllenhaal as a deeply connected one, sharing a similar artistic language and curiosity.

A Unique Aesthetic

The film’s setting is described as a “dreamscape 1930s,” blending steampunk and art deco aesthetics. A memorable scene features Bale’s character singing and dancing to “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a nod to Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein.”

Production Details

“The Bride!” has a budget of $80 million and runs for 126 minutes. It is an American production filmed in English.
