Catania Fans Blocked From Away Match Amidst Safety Concerns
Supporters of Catania FC have been prohibited from attending their upcoming match against Benevento, following a decision by the Benevento Prefecture to ban ticket sales to residents of Sicily. This measure, taken on the eve of the Group C clash, also impacts fans of Potenza and Cosenza, with similar restrictions placed on their away fixtures against Cosenza and Crotone-Cavese respectively.
Prefecture Cites Safety Concerns
The ban comes after the National Observatory on sporting events identified potential public order risks just 48 hours before the scheduled matches. According to reports, these risks are not directly related to the management of the games themselves, but rather to the possibility of clashes between different fan groups whereas traveling on the motorway. Specifically, concerns were raised about potential intersections with supporters of Cavese and Cosenza.
Pelligra Expresses Disappointment and Appeals Decision
Rosario Pelligra, president of Catania FC, has strongly protested the decision, calling it inconvenient and economically damaging to fans who had already made travel arrangements. Approximately 1,369 Catania supporters had already purchased tickets for the away sector. Pelligra announced the club will attempt to appeal the ban through the TAR (Regional Administrative Court).
“As a sign of solidarity towards all the Rossazzurri fans I will not be present in Benevento,” Pelligra stated, adding that Vincenzo Grella and Mark Bresciano will also return to Catania. He questioned the logic of overturning certainties so close to the match, penalizing both clubs and their supporters.
Pelligra also indicated that a large screen will be set up at the Massimino stadium in Catania to allow fans to watch the match together.
Financial Implications and Club Investment
Pelligra emphasized the significant economic resources, time, passion and sacrifices his group has invested in the club over the past four years. He urged institutions to continue supporting football, questioning the sustainability of the sport if even fundamental aspects like match attendance are subject to last-minute changes.
