San Marino Petrol Prices Attract Italian Motorists Amidst Rising Costs

As petrol and diesel prices surge in Italy, reaching or exceeding €2 per litre for diesel, motorists are increasingly crossing the border into San Marino to take advantage of significantly lower prices. Currently, petrol in San Marino ranges from €1.55 to €1.67 per litre, approximately 30 cents less than prices at Italian fuel pumps.

Diesel Prices Also on the Rise in San Marino

While petrol prices offer a substantial discount, diesel prices in San Marino have also been increasing. After briefly mirroring petrol prices following geopolitical events, diesel now costs around €1.95 per litre, driven by increased demand. Despite the rise, Italian license plates are still frequently seen at San Marino petrol stations, with some drivers saving up to €20 per fill-up.

Some motorists are even utilizing certified jerrycans, limited to a 10-litre capacity, to maximize their savings.

Tax Agreements and Potential Alignment with Italian Prices

San Marino operates under specific tax agreements with Italy regarding fuel. While excise duties exist in San Marino, they are capped at 15 cents, and VAT is set at 21% (compared to 22% in Italy). However, these advantages are often temporary, as bilateral agreements require San Marino to align its prices with those in Italy.

Consumer associations, such as the Consumer Help Desk Association, anticipate a price increase in San Marino following the recent surge in Italy. They express hope that the Italian government will intervene on excise duties to prevent further price hikes, which would ultimately impact consumers on both sides of the border.

Emaneul Santolini of the Consumer Help Desk Association stated that if the Italian government does not intervene, prices will rise, and this will also happen here, with unpleasant repercussions.
