The beloved restaurant SPQR, which closed its doors last year after facing financial hardships, is set to reopen as Jacuzzi under the ownership of acclaimed local restaurateurs Bronwyn and Jess Payne. Known for their successful ventures, Hoppers Garden Bar and elmo’s, sisters Payne are adding another jewel to their culinary crown, breathing new life into the iconic space.
SPQR’s closure in July 2022 sent ripples through the community, marking another casualty in an industry grappling with the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Liquidators swiftly stepped in, selling off the restaurant’s assets, including kitchen equipment and furnishings, for a total of $26,304.35 plus GST. While efforts were made to distribute these proceeds among creditors, ANZ Bank, holding a first-ranking security agreement over the company’s assets, received the lion’s share, recovering a portion of its $263,556.82 claim. Prospa, holding a second-ranking security agreement, also submitted a claim for $93,460.54.
The financial challenges faced by SPQR underscore the precariousness of the hospitality industry, particularly in the wake of global economic uncertainty.
However, the story takes a hopeful turn with the Payne sisters stepping in. Their vision for Jacuzzi promises "sophistication, spontaneity, and theatricality" to create a unique inner-city dining experience.
