Deadly Truck Collision Shuts Down A1 Motorway in Italy

Bologna, Italy – A tragic accident involving two trucks occurred on Monday, March 16, 2026, at approximately 1:30 PM local time, inside the Monte Mario tunnel along the A1 motorway near Sasso Marconi. One of the drivers was killed, trapped within the cab of his vehicle.

Details of the Incident

The collision between a heavy goods vehicle and a car transporter took place in the northbound lane of the A1, at kilometer marker 207, a section of the motorway traversing the Apennine mountains. Emergency services, including firefighters from Bologna, 118 ambulance personnel, police, and Autostrade staff, were dispatched to the scene.

Rescue Efforts and Road Closure

Two teams of firefighters, supported by a crane from headquarters, worked to extricate the victim and secure the area. The A1 motorway northbound was closed for approximately three hours to facilitate rescue operations and subsequent investigations. The closure resulted in traffic queues extending up to 10 kilometers. Water was distributed to motorists stranded in the congestion, particularly near the Sasso Marconi exit.

Ongoing Roadworks in the Area

The incident occurred as roadworks are underway in the Monte Mario tunnel and on the former motorway bypass between Nuova Porrettana and Cinque Cerri. Autostrade per l’Italia has diverted traffic towards Florence onto a new ‘bypass autostradale’ to allow for partial removal and reconstruction of the tunnel’s arch and shell. These works are expected to continue for approximately 18 months, potentially concluding in March 2025.

Traffic Updates

Motorists are advised to check real-time traffic conditions before traveling on the A1 motorway in the Bologna area.
