Elderly Cats Rescued from Neglectful Home in Cologne Amidst Shelter Overflow

Cologne, Germany – A distressing discovery in a Cologne apartment has highlighted the ongoing crisis of overcrowded animal shelters in the region. Two senior cats were found living in squalid conditions, surrounded by filth, mold, and signs of potential drug utilize. The rescue, carried out by “Team für Tiere Köln” (Team for Animals Cologne), was complicated by the poor state of the apartment and the limited capacity of local animal shelters, which are currently operating at full capacity.

Discovery and Rescue

On Thursday, a court bailiff discovered the cats even as attempting to evict residents from an apartment in Cologne. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the bailiff contacted “Team für Tiere Köln.” The rescue operation involved the animal welfare organization, police, the local public order office, and a transport company. Upon entering the apartment, rescuers found a scene of extreme neglect, with garbage, broken furniture, and vermin present. A spokesperson for the organization told BILD, “There were similarly indications of drug use and related paraphernalia.”

The Cats’ Condition

The two cats, both 16 years classic, were found to be in a vulnerable state due to their age and the unsanitary living conditions. They have since been placed in a foster home while they recover. The organization has provided them with flea treatment and deworming medication. According to a spokesperson, they are now able to “simply be cats.”

Shelter Capacity Crisis

The rescue was made more challenging by the fact that Cologne’s animal shelters are currently at full capacity and have implemented a temporary ban on accepting new animals. This situation underscores a growing problem for animal welfare organizations in the area.

Legal Ramifications

The former residents of the apartment may face legal consequences for violating animal welfare laws. Police have not released further details regarding the investigation.
