Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle voiced concerns on Wednesday, December 31st, regarding impending increases in health insurance costs for Illinois residents. These increases stem from the expiration of tax credits associated with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often referred to as Obamacare, and are set to impact over 550,000 individuals throughout the state, effective January 1, 2026.
The expiring tax credits, designed to make health insurance more affordable, provided considerable financial assistance to eligible individuals and families. With their lapse, many Illinoisans will experience a meaningful rise in their monthly premiums.Health authorities are actively assessing the full extent of the financial impact on residents and exploring potential mitigation strategies.
“The expiration of these crucial tax credits presents a real challenge for many families in Cook County and across Illinois,” stated President Preckwinkle during the press conference. “We are working to ensure residents are aware of their options and can navigate the changes to maintain access to affordable healthcare.”
Residents potentially affected by these changes are encouraged to visit the official ACA marketplace website (https://www.healthcare.gov/) to review updated plan options and determine eligibility for any remaining financial assistance programs. Additional resources and information are also available thru the Illinois Department of Insurance (https://insurance.illinois.gov/).
