Mexican Consulate in Phoenix Reassures Community Amidst ICE Operations

The Mexican consulate in Phoenix, Arizona, led by Consul General Jorge Mendoza Yescas, is actively working to reassure the Mexican community amidst ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. While concerns about potential mass deportations have risen, the consulate emphasizes the importance of preparation and awareness of rights.

Increased ICE Operations Confirmed

Despite some denials from state politicians and law enforcement, Consul General Jorge Mendoza Yescas has confirmed an increase in ICE operations in the Phoenix area. This has prompted the consulate to reinforce its role as a resource for Mexican families impacted by these actions.

Current Arrest Numbers

According to the consulate, approximately five to ten individuals are being arrested daily in the Phoenix area as part of these ongoing ICE operations. These operations are not latest, having continued even before the current presidential administration.

Concerns Over Collateral Arrests

A key concern raised by Consul General Yescas is the issue of “collateral arrests.” This refers to the detention of undocumented individuals who happen to be present in a home during an ICE arrest, even if they are not the primary target.

“Return to Mexico” Family Action Plan

To help families prepare for potential deportations, the consulate is promoting a family action plan dubbed “Return to Mexico.” This plan advises families on crucial steps to take, such as arranging for childcare and designating guardians for children in the event of a loved one’s deportation.

Consular Registration as Valid Identification

The consulate has reminded the community that consular registration serves as a valid official identification that can be presented to law enforcement.

Resources Available to the Community

The consulate is offering free legal consultations with immigration lawyers for Mexican citizens. A “Know Your Rights” information workshop is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:00 am at Excelencia School Center in Phoenix.
