Audi Discontinues A8 Flagship Sedan, Shifts Focus to SUVs
After three decades on the road, Audi has ceased production of its A8 luxury sedan, marking a significant shift in the automaker’s strategy towards sport utility vehicles (SUVs). The decision, finalized in February 2026, reflects a broader industry trend prioritizing larger, more profitable SUV models.
Finish of an Era for the A8
The Audi A8 first debuted in 1994 and the current generation arrived in 2017. Insiders confirmed to Auto Express that production recently ended, with order books closing in February 2026. While some remaining stock may still be available at dealerships, the A8 is effectively discontinued.
Engine Options at the End of Production
In its final iteration, the A8 was offered with two engine choices: a 282bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel and a 4.0-litre petrol V8 in the high-performance S8 model. This contrasts with competitors like the BMW 7 Series, which continues to offer plug-in hybrid and fully electric (i7) options.
Audi’s SUV Offensive
Audi is now concentrating its efforts on expanding its SUV lineup. The company is preparing to launch the all-new Q9 luxury SUV, positioned to compete with the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz GLS. The Q9 is expected to be available with petrol, plug-in hybrid, and potentially diesel powertrains, with a high-performance SQ9 variant also planned.
Alternatives for Audi Luxury Buyers
For customers seeking a luxurious Audi experience, the A6 (available in hybrid) and the all-electric e-tron GT are now key options. The existing Q7 and Q8 SUV models also remain available.
Future Electric Strategy
While an all-electric Q9 model isn’t currently planned, Audi is actively developing electric vehicles. The company’s future electric offerings will likely focus on SUVs and GT-style vehicles, mirroring the broader market shift. Currently, there is no sign of an all-electric model to rival the forthcoming Range Rover Electric. Auto Express reports.
Availability of New A8 Models
Despite the production halt, new Audi A8 models are still listed for sale on websites like CARFAX and Autotrader, though availability is limited.
