Bergen Apartment Burglarized, Residents Shocked

A resident of Damsgårdsveien in Bergen, Norway, returned home on Monday, March 23, 2026, to discover her apartment had been burglarized. The incident is part of a series of break-ins reported in the same building, according to police.

Gunni Solberg, 72, described the scene as “shocking,” finding her apartment completely ransacked. “I thought I was seeing things,” she told Bergens Avisen (BA). All of her gold jewelry and a sum of euros were stolen.

Easy Access for Thieves

Solberg had been away since Friday and found her front door unlocked upon her return. “I didn’t obtain the key in properly, and the door just opened,” she explained to BA. A towel and spray bottle were found in the hallway, leading Solberg to believe the perpetrators attempted to conceal their presence.

The bedroom was in disarray, with boxes, jewelry boxes, and papers scattered throughout the room. Fortunately, her traditional Norwegian bunad and associated silver were left untouched.

Police Investigation

Police responded to the scene around 3:15 PM on Monday. Operations leader Tore-André Brakstad confirmed that another apartment in the same building had also been targeted. “There were ‘break-in marks’ – signs that someone had broken in,” Brakstad stated.

Police secured clues from both crime scenes and believe the same individual or individuals are responsible for both burglaries. The police station chief at Bergen city center police station, Ole Bjørn Sveen, informed BA on Tuesday that the lock box had been drilled out.

Resident’s Concerns

Solberg expressed feeling violated and unsafe, noting the ease with which the perpetrator gained access. She hopes the building management will consider installing a surveillance camera outside the front door.

“It’s disgusting,” Solberg said. “You thought you were quite safe here.”
