The Indonesian electric vehicle (EV) market is buzzing with anticipation as rumors swirl about the potential arrival of the BYD Dolphin Mini. This compact electric car, which has already made waves in South America, is generating excitement about its potential to bring affordable EVs to Indonesia.

The BYD Dolphin Mini has been registered in Indonesia’s Intellectual Property Data Base, suggesting serious interest from the Chinese automaker. While performance figures are slightly lower than its larger sibling, the BYD Dolphin already available in Indonesia, the Mini still boasts respectable specs, including a peak output of 55 kW and 135 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between two LFP Blade battery options: a 30.08 kWh battery offering a 305 km range or a larger 38.88 kWh unit extending the range to 405 km.

The existing BYD Dolphin in Indonesia comes in two variants: Extended Range and Standard Range. Both share similar characteristics, with the key difference being their battery capacity and range. The Extended Range variant utilizes a 60.48 kWh LFP battery, delivering 310 Nm of torque and a power output of 150 kW, with an impressive range of 490 kilometers. The Standard Range variant maintains similar torque and power output, but with a 44.9 kWh battery, resulting in a range of 410 kilometers.

One of the most compelling aspects of the BYD Dolphin Mini is its price point. Upon launch in South America in mid-2024, the Mini Dolphin started at 69,800 yuan, roughly translating to Rp. 150 million for the base model with a 305 km range. This affordability has been a key factor in its success in South America, and Indonesian consumers will be hoping to see a similar price point upon its potential arrival.

The success of the BYD Dolphin Mini in Indonesia will hinge on several factors, including its pricing strategy, consumer perception of EVs, and the development of charging infrastructure.

However, if BYD can successfully address these challenges, the Dolphin Mini has the potential to become a game-changer in Indonesia’s EV market, making electric mobility more accessible and appealing to a wider range of consumers.
