DGA Unanimously Approves Four-Year Contract with Studios, Boosts AI Safeguards and Health Plan Funding

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has recommended its members approve a four-year contract with major studios that includes a 24.4% increase in health plan contributions, salary raises, and AI usage regulations, according to a statement from the union. The agreement, which requires member approval by June 25, 2024, aims to address industry challenges including AI’s impact on employment and healthcare costs.

Health Plan Contributions Surge, Salary Raises Set

The proposed contract mandates a 24.4% increase in studio contributions to the DGA’s health plan over four years, the largest such boost since the program’s inception. In exchange, the union will adjust plan eligibility thresholds and premiums, as outlined in a DGA press release. Minimum salaries for directors will rise by 2.5% in the first year, with incremental increases of 3% in subsequent years. Directors of non-prime-time dramatic programs will see annual 2.5% raises.

AI Regulations and Federal Incentive Advocacy

The agreement includes new rules requiring directors to oversee AI-generated footage and mandating studios notify the DGA if a director’s work is licensed to train generative AI systems. An employer-funded program will also provide directors with AI skills training, the union said. The contract further secures a commitment from studios to advocate for a federal production incentive to retain U.S. filming jobs, according to the DGA.

Context and Industry Implications

The deal follows months of negotiations between the DGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which praised the agreement as “a fair deal that helps advance a stable and successful entertainment industry.” The contract, if approved, will take effect July 1, 2024, and expire June 30, 2030. Industry analysts note the AI safeguards reflect growing concerns about automation’s impact on creative roles, with the DGA’s provisions setting a potential precedent for other unions.

Next Steps for DGA Members

DGA members will vote on the contract by 5 p.m. on June 25, 2024. The union’s president, Thomas Schlamme, emphasized the agreement’s role in “providing stability and potential for growth” amid industry contraction. If approved, the contract marks a pivotal moment in labor negotiations as studios and unions navigate evolving technological and economic pressures.
