DIY engineer and YouTuber CNC Dan substantially upgraded a basic VR headset he previously built, adding 6 DoF and wireless controllers. The result, while not flawless, is notable.

Last month, we covered a barebones VR headset created by DIY engineer Daniel McKenzie, showcased on his YouTube channel CNCDan. The headset functioned, but it only offered three degrees of freedom (3DoF). This means it tracked head movements for looking up, down, left, right, and tilting, but lacked positional tracking.

Daniel initially felt positional tracking (6 DoF) wasn’t necesary, as he primarily intended to use the headset for sim racing, where 3DoF proved sufficient. Though, many viewers considered the lack of positional tracking a significant drawback, even for sim racing applications.
