Fire at Fysak Activity Center in Åsane, Norway: Investigation Underway

A fire broke out at the Fysak activity center in Åsane, Bergen, Norway, on the evening of February 17, 2026, causing significant concern and prompting a large emergency response. The fire, which began around 6:00 PM, led to the evacuation of the building and continues to be extinguished as of late Tuesday night.

Fire Department Response and Current Status

The Bergen fire department received numerous emergency calls from witnesses reporting the blaze. As of 10:00 PM, firefighters were still actively working to extinguish the fire, which had spread to the roof structure of the building, formerly known as Åsanehallen. According to duty manager Børre Brekkvassmo at the 110 central, the flames in the walls had been knocked down, but the ceiling continued to burn intensely (Bergens Avis).

Fire crews are utilizing three lifts to cool structures and open roofs. The fire service maintains control of the situation, but crews will continue working through the night. Authorities are urging the public to stay away from the area and allow emergency services space to operate.

Potential Cause and Police Investigation

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Police have received information about two individuals seen running from Fysak around the time the fire started and are seeking to identify and question them (Bergens Avis). While it is too early to determine if the fire was intentionally set, arson is among the hypotheses being considered.

Impact and Concerns

The fire has raised concerns about the loss of equipment at the popular activity center. Gaming events scheduled at Fysak have been canceled for the foreseeable future. The facility houses equipment valued at approximately 500,000 kroner.

Residents in nearby buildings were initially advised to close windows and turn off ventilation systems to prevent smoke inhalation. Thomas Carlo Fantolini, a resident of a neighboring building, described being shocked by the sight of the flames and smoke.

Witness Accounts

A 13-year-old basketball player, Leon Emil Omdahl, reported hearing screams and seeing flames inside the hall. A neighbor reported seeing flames and smoke and expressed fear that the fire would spread. Another resident, Stefan Lundgren, noted the intensity of the fire and predicted it would take considerable time to extinguish.

Roadblocks and Safety Measures

Police have established roadblocks at Horisont shopping center and the north side of Åsane centre to manage traffic and ensure public safety. No injuries have been reported.
