Tragic Accident: Centuries-Old Tree Collapses, Killing Nine in South Sulawesi

In a devastating incident that has shocked the community, a centuries-old tree in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, collapsed on a cabin during a rainstorm, killing at least nine people seeking shelter. The accident occurred on Sunday at the Bulu Matanre Shrine in Mattabulu Village, Lalabata District.

Tree Falls, Trapping Visitors at Shrine

According to Akbar Sirajid, an official from the local Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the shrine is known for its ancient graves and attracts numerous visitors. Witnesses reported heavy rainfall prior to the tragedy. As thunder roared, a massive tree branch, described as being the size of a Toyota Avanza, crashed onto the cabin where 20 visitors were sheltering from the storm.

Rescuers Work to Free Victims Amidst Devastation

Rescue workers immediately sprang into action, using chainsaws to clear the fallen debris and reach the trapped individuals. Sadly, nine people lost their lives in the incident, while eight others sustained serious injuries, mostly broken bones.

Victims Identified, Families Mourn

Soppeng District Police Chief, Adjunct Commissioner Andi Yusuf, confirmed that all the victims have been identified and their bodies have been returned to their families. The deceased have been named as Rosmini (37), Marnuni (34), Asse (40), Wammenneng (60), Karyati (55), Rabiah (50), Ikada, Agus, and Nuraeni.

Injured Victims Receive Medical Attention

Eight injured visitors were transported to Latemmamala Municipal Hospital for treatment. They are: Sulfiana (20), Satriana (27), Nafisah (66), Taju (24), Sakkatang (33), Nur Indah Sari (29), Iruse (35), and Iwan (36).
