Indonesian Auto Market Faces Headwinds as Consumer Spending Shifts

Jakarta – The Indonesian automotive market is experiencing a slowdown, driven by shifting consumer priorities and economic pressures. While automotive events like the Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) aim to stimulate sales, underlying economic factors are impacting purchasing decisions.

Weakening Sales and Economic Factors

In 2025, wholesale car sales in Indonesia are projected to decline by 7.2 percent compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 803,000 units [Gaikindo]. This downturn is largely attributed to weakening consumer purchasing power.

From Pride to Prudence: Changing Consumer Attitudes

Consumer sentiment towards car ownership is evolving. Previously viewed as a status symbol, car purchases are now subject to greater financial scrutiny. According to Permata Bank Chief Economist Josua Pardede, prospective buyers are prioritizing financial security over the prestige of owning a new vehicle [Gaikindo].

Consumers are now carefully considering factors beyond the initial purchase price, including installment payments, maintenance costs, and fuel efficiency. After-sales service and maintenance expenses are likewise playing a more significant role in the decision-making process [Gaikindo].

Middle-Class Income and Affordability

The income growth of Indonesia’s middle class has not kept pace with rising car prices. While middle-class incomes have increased by around 3.5 percent, car prices have risen by 5-7 percent [Gaikindo]. The majority of the Indonesian automotive market (70-80 percent) is concentrated on vehicles priced at or below IDR 300 million [Gaikindo].

Upcoming Automotive Events

The Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2025 is scheduled to take place from November 21-30, 2025, at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in BSD City, Tangerang [ACC] and [Jakarta Auto Week]. The GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) is set for July 30 – August 9, 2026, also at ICE-BSD City [Indonesia Auto Show]. These events aim to boost year-end sales and showcase the latest automotive models and technologies.

GJAW 2026 is planned for November 2026 at a new location [Jakarta Auto Week].
