Trump Warns UK Over Chagos Islands and Potential Iran Strike

Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran have drawn in the United Kingdom, as former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly warned against ceding sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Trump’s concerns center on the potential need to use the Diego Garcia airbase for military action against Iran, a move the UK appears hesitant to support.

Trump Links Chagos Deal to Iran Strike Capability

Donald Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the deal between the UK and Mauritius regarding the Chagos Islands is a “big mistake.” He specifically linked the agreement to the potential need for the U.S. To utilize Diego Garcia and the Fairford airfield in Gloucestershire for a preemptive strike against Iran, should negotiations over Iran’s nuclear ambitions fail. “Should Iran decide not to make a Deal, it may be necessary for the United States to use Diego Garcia, and the airfield located in Fairford, in order to eradicate a potential attack by a highly unstable and dangerous Regime,” Trump wrote. [The Guardian]

UK Position and Concerns

The UK government has expressed caution regarding a preemptive strike on Iran, noting it would likely be inconsistent with international law. U.S. Bases within the UK, such as Fairford, require UK government approval and legal justification for military operations. Under the agreement reached last May, the UK intends to transfer sovereignty of the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius while leasing back Diego Garcia for 99 years at an annual cost of approximately £101 million. [BBC News]

Iran’s Response and Warnings

Iran has warned the United Nations that it will respond “decisively” to any military aggression from the United States. Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeed Iravani, called on the UN Security Council to condemn Trump’s threats, specifically referencing the potential use of Diego Garcia. [NDTV]

Iravani emphasized that Iran does not seek conflict but warned that any attack would be met with retaliation against “all bases, facilities and assets of a hostile power” in the region. [NDTV] Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stated, “More dangerous than this warship, however, is the weapon that can send it to the bottom of the sea.”

Negotiations and Military Buildup

Despite the heightened rhetoric, indirect talks between the U.S. And Iran have been ongoing. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently stated that “good progress” had been made in Geneva, with both sides reaching “broad agreement on a set of guiding principles.” [NDTV]

However, the U.S. Continues to increase its military presence in the Persian Gulf, deploying two aircraft carriers and numerous fighter jets. [NDTV]

Historical Context of the Chagos Islands

The Chagos Islands became British territory in 1814, ceded along with Mauritius. They were separated from Mauritius in 1965, and purchased by the UK for approximately £3 million. Mauritius has long argued that this separation was illegal and a precondition for its independence in 1968. [TIME]
