Iranian Ambassador: Bulgaria Not a Target for Iran

Bulgaria is not considered a legitimate target by Iran, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ambassador to Sofia, H.E. Ali Reza Irvash. The ambassador made this assertion in interviews with Bulgarian National Radio and other Bulgarian news outlets on March 7 and 8, 2026, addressing concerns about potential threats to the country amid regional tensions.

No Hostile Intentions Towards Bulgaria

Ambassador Irvash firmly rejected suggestions that Iran might threaten Bulgaria, emphasizing that Tehran does not consider any location within Bulgarian territory to be a legitimate target for attack [1]. He stressed Iran’s desire to strengthen friendly relations with Bulgaria and focus on deepening bilateral ties.

Concerns Over US Aircraft Presence

The ambassador addressed concerns raised by the Bulgarian public regarding the presence of American NATO planes at Sofia’s “Vasil Levski” airport. He noted that Bulgarians are worried about this presence, stating, “This is not the war that the Bulgarian people are waging…” [3]. Irvash suggested that public pressure could lead to the removal of these planes, alleviating fears of Bulgarian complicity in regional conflicts.

Attacks Focused on US Bases

Regarding recent attacks in the region, Ambassador Irvash clarified that Iran’s actions are directed solely at American bases located in neighboring countries. He stated that these attacks are a response to aggression against Iran and expressed regret that these bases are situated within the territories of “old friends and brotherly peoples” [1].

Assurances and Future Developments

When questioned about the possibility of a stray Iranian missile reaching Bulgaria, Irvash acknowledged his inability to predict future events. However, he pointed out that those currently engaged in military operations against Iran are also working to prevent such scenarios [1]. He urged a focus on addressing the underlying causes of these fears rather than dwelling on the possibility of accidental strikes.

Reaffirming Bulgaria’s Security

The ambassador categorically stated that Iran does not provide any information designating locations within Bulgaria as legitimate targets [4]. He also affirmed that the Iranian people hold no hostile feelings toward Bulgaria and desire closer cooperation [2].
