Early Life and Education

Born in Třebíč, Šmíd demonstrated an early passion for acting, participating in a drama club during his primary school years. He continued his studies at the Brno Conservatory, preparing for a professional career in the performing arts. Following his graduation from the Conservatory, he pursued further education at the Prague DAMU (Academy of Performing Arts).

Early Career and Švanda Theatre

Šmíd began his professional acting career in 1993 at the Drama Studio in Ústí nad Labem, where he performed for three years. He subsequently took on guest roles at various Prague stages before becoming a permanent member of Švand’s Theatre in 2002. He remained associated with Švand’s Theatre, even as a freelance actor after 2014.

Film and Television Roles

Šmíd’s film debut came in 1988 with a role in the Slovak drama Vlakári, where he played the character of Vojt. He followed this with a role in the 1990 fairy tale About the Forgetful Warlock. Šmíd achieved his greatest fame for his portrayal of the endearing but hapless Dr. Čeňko Dobešek in the comedy series Doctor from the Hippo Lake. Director Zdeněk Troška chose Šmíd for the role, and the character quickly became a fan favorite.

Personal Life and Death

Initial reports incorrectly attributed his death to AIDS. but, his sister, Jolana Kružíková, clarified that he died from an aggressive form of lung cancer combined with severe pneumonia.
