KAI Commuter Prepares for Revolution in Rail Travel with "Gapeka 2025"

Get ready for a smoother, faster journey on Indonesia’s commuter lines. KAI Commuter, the country’s leading train operator, is set to launch its ambitious "Gapeka 2025" system on February 1, 2025, promising a significant transformation in the rail travel experience.

According to Asdo Artriviyanto, president Director of KAI Commuter, the primary focus of Gapeka 2025 is twofold: optimizing services and reducing user density, particularly during peak hours. In a press release dated January 30, 2025, Artriviyanto emphasized, "This step is taken to optimize services and reduce user density, especially during rush hours. Besides, it will also increase user accessibility to commuter line services.”

The overhaul will see immediate improvements in travel times on several key routes. The Nambo-Depok stretch of the Bogor Commuter Line will see a speed increase from 70 km/hour to 80 km/hour, shaving off 4 precious minutes from the journey between Bogor and Jakarta City. Commuters can now expect a travel time of 85 minutes compared to the previous 89 minutes. The Rangkasbitung Cross – Tanah Abang route will also benefit from a faster commute, now at 98 minutes, down from 107 minutes.

While the Merak and Basoete Commuter Lines will not experience significant changes in their operating schedule, KAI Commuter remains dedicated to delivering high-quality service on these lines. The Basoete Line will continue its daily 64 trips, while the Merak line will maintain its 14 daily trips with adjusted departure times, starting between 7-25 minutes.

KAI Commuter has also achieved a notable success in reducing average waiting times, trimming it down by 2 minutes from 162 minutes to 160 minutes. This continuous improvement across all regions is a testament to their commitment to providing a seamless and enjoyable travel experience.

Beyond Jakarta, KAI Commuter’s expansion continues. In Region 2 Bandung, four additional Jatiluhur Commuter Line trips offer shorter travel times. Region 6 Yogyakarta has seen an increase in commuter line services with the Yogya-purur line now operating 27 trips up from 24, and the Prameks Commuter Line expanded from 8 to 10 trips. Region 8 Surabaya has welcomed two new stations, Boharan Station and Kedinding Station, further bolstering accessibility for commuters.

Collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Transportation’s Directorate General of Railways have paved the way for the successful implementation of Gapeka 2025. Prior to its launch, the establishment of Pondok Rajeg Station as a new service stop between Citayam Station and Cibinong Station highlights KAI Commuter’s dedication to convenient and efficient rail travel.
