Lake Como’s Regina Road Implements Smart Traffic Lights to Ease Congestion

Traffic flow along the SS340 Regina road, a key artery around Lake Como, is being improved with the introduction of smart traffic lights between Colonno and Isola di Ossuccio. The initiative, launched on Monday, March 16, 2026, aims to alleviate persistent congestion, particularly during peak hours.

Smart Traffic Light System Activated

The new system utilizes intelligent traffic lights designed to create an alternating one-way flow, optimizing traffic movement. The initial phase of monitoring, completed on Sunday, March 15, 2026, gathered data on the existing traffic light system to inform the reconfiguration of the three smart traffic lights located at bottleneck areas. All traffic lights, including the one in Spurano, are currently operational as technicians calibrate the system to minimize disruption.

Traffic Restrictions for Tourist Buses

Complementing the smart traffic light implementation is an ordinance from Anas, effective March 16, 2026, restricting northbound travel for tourist buses on the Regina road between 6:30 am and 9:00 pm. This ban on heavy vehicles exceeding 11 meters in length is intended to further reduce congestion. Anas has requested cooperation from residents and commuters during this period.

Testing and Refinement

Tuesday, March 17, 2026, marks the first full day of operation for the new system. Although some queues are expected during the initial calibration phase, officials anticipate significant improvements in traffic flow. The effectiveness of the combined system – smart traffic lights and bus restrictions – will be closely monitored.
