Oklahoma Fire Department Declines $250,000 Google Donation Amid Data Center Concerns

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. – The Rock Volunteer Fire Department has rejected a $250,000 donation from Google, citing concerns over a proposed data center and its potential impact on the community’s safety and quality of life. The decision, supported by local residents, underscores a growing tension between economic development and the preservation of rural lifestyles.

Community Opposition to Data Center

Residents of the Rock community, located along State Highway 97, have voiced strong opposition to the proposed data center. Charley Pearson, a lifelong resident and the Rock Volunteer Fire Department’s chief for 35 years, has been a leading voice in this opposition. Pearson expressed the community’s desire to maintain the peaceful character of the area, stating that residents “moved out here for” the quiet lifestyle.

Safety Concerns and Traffic Impact

A primary concern revolves around the anticipated increase in traffic and the potential for accidents. Pearson highlighted the inherent dangers, recalling tragic incidents on Highway 97. “As a volunteer firefighter, I’ve stood in the middle of that road, and I’ve heard a mother cry and shout given that her son, her daughter got killed in a car wreck,” he told the city council. The department, comprised of 28 volunteers, two stations, and ten trucks, is well-equipped for a volunteer organization but fears being overwhelmed by increased demands.

The Donation Offer and the Department’s Decision

Google representative Kate Franko offered the $250,000 donation to the fire department, acknowledging the potential benefit to the department. But, Pearson and the department’s board of directors determined that accepting the funds would compromise their commitment to the community. Pearson stated that accepting the money would “jeopardize the public’s support,” which he valued more than the financial gain.

“Money is the Root of All Evil”

During discussions with the city council, Pearson expressed his reservations about the influence of money, stating, “Money is the root of all evil.” Despite the potential benefits, the department ultimately decided to decline the donation, prioritizing the trust and support of the community.

Department’s Commitment to Public Service

Pearson emphasized that the Rock Volunteer Fire Department remains dedicated to serving the public, regardless of the outcome of the data center proposal. “Whatever comes down the pike, we’re servants to the public. We will serve this, whatever happens,” he affirmed. The department’s decision reflects a commitment to upholding community values and prioritizing safety over financial incentives.
