Paul Biya Secures Eighth Presidential Term in Cameroon

Paul Biya (92) confirmed his position as president for an eighth term after winning the presidential election in Cameroon.

cameroon’s Constitutional Council announced biya received 53.7 percent of the vote, while his opponent, former government minister Issa Tchiroma Bakery, garnered 35.2 percent.

“This declares the president-elect: candidate Biya Paul,” stated Constitutional Council President Clement Atangana on Monday, October 27, according to CNN.

Paul Biya was born on February 13, 1933, in Mvomeka, Cameroon, while the country was under French control. Cameroon gained independence from France in 1960.

Biya entered politics during his college years. He studied politics and law in France and returned to Cameroon in 1960.

Throughout the 1960s,Biya held several government positions in Cameroon. In June 1975, he became prime minister under President Ahmadou Ahidjo, as reported by britannica.

in 1982, Ahidjo resigned unexpectedly.
