Pennsylvania Man Arrested in California, Accused of Grooming Minor and Ties to Extremist Ideology

A Pennsylvania man, Matthew Edward Pysher, 18, of Bangor, Pennsylvania, was arrested late Friday at a motel in Castaic, California, and faces federal charges after authorities rescued a 13-year-old girl. The arrest is linked to an investigation into online grooming and potential ties to a nihilistic violent extremist ideology.

Grooming and Alleged Abuse

According to federal prosecutors, Pysher allegedly groomed the victim online, encouraging her to send sexually explicit material and engage in acts of self-harm. Authorities say Pysher traveled to Los Angeles last week to meet the victim, who had recently turned 13.

Law enforcement encountered Pysher and the victim at a Castaic motel room. A search of the room revealed condoms, a knife, lubricant, razor blades, bloody tissues, and a boarding pass for Pysher’s flight from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, according to a federal criminal complaint. The victim told authorities that Pysher had sex with her, cut her with a knife, and repeatedly choked her.

Federal Charges and Potential Sentence

Pysher has been charged with travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, a crime that carries a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Concerns Over Growing Extremist Threat

Authorities believe Pysher may be associated with a nihilistic violent extremist ideology. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli described this ideology as “a growing threat to American families” and “one of the most twisted and disturbing ideas to crawl out of the Internet.”

Essayli explained that nihilistic violent extremists are individuals “who engage in criminal conduct within the United States to further goals that derive mainly from a hatred of society and a desire to bring about its collapse by sowing indiscriminate chaos, destruction and social instability.” He also noted these individuals often operate within networks, such as the group known as 764.

Homeland Security Investigations reports that these online groups have abused hundreds of mostly female minor victims worldwide, with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s CyberTipline receiving over 1,300 reports related to these groups in 2024 alone.

FBI Investigation and Parallel Case

The FBI is currently investigating more than 450 similar cases nationwide, indicating a rapidly growing trend. This case marks the second federal charge in less than a week in the Central District of California. Last week, Bryant Najera Gonzalez, 24, of Downey, California, was arrested on charges of coercing minor girls into creating and sharing sexually explicit videos, including content depicting self-harm.

Warning to Parents

Essayli urged parents to closely monitor their children’s online activity and phones, stating, “Any child with access to the Internet is a sitting duck for these sick, deranged and demonic individuals looking to harm your children.” He suggested that there is no way to guarantee a child’s safety online.

Timeline of Events

Authorities were alerted to the situation on February 10th when the victim’s mother contacted the FBI with concerns about her daughter being encouraged to self-harm by someone online identified as “Matthew.” The victim and Pysher had reportedly communicated on a Discord server related to mental health for approximately three months.

On February 20th, law enforcement identified Pysher as the individual behind the online username and tracked him to the motel. A Faraday bag, used to block electronic signals, was found near Pysher’s cellphone in the motel room. The victim had reportedly left a suicide note and run away from home, with Pysher allegedly planning to jump from a tall hotel with her.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol, is investigating the matter.
