No,taking Paracetamol While Pregnant Doesn’t cause Autism or ADHD,Major Review finds

An umbrella review finds that studies suggesting a link between prenatal paracetamol exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders are limited by bias and weak methodology, with stronger analyses showing no clear causal link.

Researchers recently analyzed the quality and validity of existing evidence linking paracetamol (acetaminophen) use during pregnancy to the risk of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. Their findings were published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).
Conflicting Messages from Experts and Policymakers
Paracetamol is a very common medication during pregnancy. In September 2025, the president of the United States publicly cautioned against using Tylenol (acetaminophen) while pregnant, citing a potential autism risk in children. However, medical authorities and health agencies around the world quickly responded, reaffirming paracetamolS safety during pregnancy. They emphasized that the current evidence doesn’t support these warnings.
evidence Gaps and inconsistent Findings in Literature
Several systematic reviews have explored a potential link between paracetamol use and neurodevelopmental disorders. But the results have been inconsistent. Some studies suggest a possible association, while others find no connection. This has created confusion for both expectant mothers and healthcare professionals. The new umbrella review aimed to clarify this situation by examining the quality of the existing research.
The researchers found that many of the studies claiming a link were limited by notable biases. These included issues with how data was collected, analyzed, and interpreted. Specifically, they noted problems with controlling for other factors that could influence neurodevelopment, such as maternal age, socioeconomic status, and other medical conditions.
When the researchers focused on the most rigorous analyses – those that accounted for these biases – they found no clear evidence of a causal relationship between paracetamol use during pregnancy and an increased risk of ADHD or ASD. In fact, the stronger studies tended to show little to no association.
What Does This Mean for Pregnant Women?
This review doesn’t mean that paracetamol is entirely without risk. Like all medications, it should be used responsibly and only when necessary. However, it does suggest that pregnant women shouldn’t be unduly alarmed by warnings about a link to
