Southern Italy Experiences Mild Winter Temperatures

Southern Italy, the Middle and Lower adriatic regions, and the Strait of Messina are experiencing unusually warm temperatures for winter. Messina and Reggio Calabria reached a high of 20°C today.A brief period of rain earlier in the day caused a temporary dip to 14°C, but temperatures quickly rebounded.

Conditions are cooler further east. Abruzzo, Puglia, and Basilicata saw maximum temperatures of onyl 19°C in cities like Pescara, Bari, Taranto, Brindisi, Foggia, and Gallipoli. Lecce and Santa maria di Leuca reached 18°C, while Putignano and Cisternino saw 16°C. Matera, Altamura, Martina Franca, Alberobello, and Locorotondo experienced a high of 15°C.

A cyclone impacting the Balkans and the Aegean Sea is influencing the weather in southern Italy. This system brings strong winds, scattered showers, cloud cover, and unusually cold temperatures. Satellite imagery clearly shows the extent of this weather system affecting Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey.

Central Italy, the North, and Sardinia are enjoying full sunshine and spring-like conditions. Though, temperatures remain below average, especially overnight. A thermal inversion is causing minimum temperatures to drop to near-winter levels. Weather models suggest meaningful changes are coming next week.
