Pope’s Support for Aung San Suu Kyi Highlights Double Standard on Persecuted Leaders
Pope Francis’ call for the release of Myanmar’s jailed democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and his offer of Vatican sanctuary are both bold and welcome gestures. But his silence on another imprisoned democracy leader, Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai, raises questions about a double standard in defending human rights.
Myanmar and the Rohingya: A Consistent Advocate
The Pope’s support for Suu Kyi isn’t new. He met her in 2013 and 2017, and even established full diplomatic relations with Myanmar during this time. His consistent advocacy for the Rohingya Muslims, facing persecution in the country, is also laudable. He has repeatedly spoken out against their plight, calling them his “brothers and sisters” and urging the international community for aid.
The Dalai Lama and the Uyghurs: A Missing Voice
However, this consistent advocacy for certain groups seems absent in other crucial situations. The Pope has declined to meet with Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and he has been largely silent on the persecution of Uyghurs in China’s Xinjiang region.
Jimmy Lai: A Case for Vatican Sanctuary?
With concerns growing about Jimmy Lai’s health and imprisonment conditions in Hong Kong, coupled with his reported inability to receive Holy Communion, many are calling for the Pope to extend the same offer of sanctuary extended to Suu Kyi. Cardinal Charles Bo, president of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences, has been a vocal supporter of Lai and Hong Kong, repeatedly denouncing his crackdown and calling for his release.
The Pope’s message of hope and resilience for Myanmar, urging young people to fight for their homeland, applies equally to Hong Kong. The call for “respect for the dignity and rights of all” should extend to all persecuted individuals, regardless of their location or religious background.
Time for Consistent Action
Given the Pope’s bold stance on Suu Kyi’s situation, it is time for consistent action in supporting all defenders of democracy and human rights around the world.
