Prabowo and Pakistan PM to Visit Tehran in Effort to De-escalate Middle East Tensions
Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are planning a joint visit to Tehran, Iran, to address escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to statements made by officials on March 6, 2026. The initiative comes amid heightened concerns following recent US-Israel attacks on Iran.
Diplomatic Effort to Prevent Escalation
The plan for the visit was revealed by Jimly Asshiddiqie, Chief Advisor at the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), following a meeting with President Prabowo on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Asshiddiqie stated that Prabowo had spoken with Prime Minister Sharif by phone regarding the proposed trip. Antara News reported that the Pakistani leader expressed eagerness to join Prabowo in Tehran to advocate for restraint.
According to Asshiddiqie, the intention of the visit is not to mediate on existing conflicts, but rather to “prevent escalation” in the region. DetikNews also reported on the planned joint visit, citing Jimly Asshiddiqie’s statements.
Regional Role for Indonesia and Pakistan
Both Indonesia and Pakistan, as two of the largest non-Arab Muslim countries, are seen as potentially playing a constructive role in restoring stability and security in the Gulf region. Asshiddiqie emphasized that despite unfavorable odds, Indonesia and Pakistan should attempt to broker peace.
The initiative has been welcomed as a positive step towards de-escalation, with Pakistan reportedly offering strong support for Prabowo’s proposal. Kompas.com reported that Prabowo received a direct phone call from the Pakistani leader regarding the visit.
Focus on De-escalation, Not Mediation
Officials have clarified that the purpose of the visit is not to mediate between conflicting parties, but to prevent further escalation of tensions. Tempo.co reported that the focus is on preventing further attacks on Iran.
