Russia Intensifies Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure
Moscow is escalating attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy facilities with drones and missiles, causing power outages across nine Ukrainian regions as winter approaches. These strikes aim to paralyze Ukraine’s energy infrastructure before the onset of colder weather.
Early Friday, a barrage of drones and missiles struck energy facilities, disrupting power supply in nine regions. In Kyiv, parts of the city were plunged into darkness, interrupting water supply and causing travel delays. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces launched approximately 450 drones and 30 rockets targeting essential infrastructure.
“It is indeed the civil and energy infrastructure that is the main goal of Russian blows before the heating season,” zelenskyy stated on social media.
Nine people were injured in Kyiv, with emergency services responding to a fire in a 10-story residential building. ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svetlana Grinchuk, confirmed the attacks were targeting the power grid.
Attacks on energy infrastructure have become a key tactic for Russia throughout the nearly three-and-a-half-year war. The strategy, employed by Vladimir Putin and his generals, aims to weaken Ukrainian resistance by depriving citizens of heat and power.
Serhiy Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state energy company, told the financial Times that the goal is to “break our spirit.” He emphasized that these attacks have no military justification, as the targeted assets hold no military value.
Ukrainian officials informed Western allies at a recent G7 Energy Ministers meeting in Toronto, Canada, that recent strikes have reduced gas production by nearly 60%. Ukraine relies heavily on natural gas for heating during the winter months.
