Promised to be free and reassuring, the Eurorepar winter assessment examines 20 points of your car. Tested using a hidden camera, this control nevertheless reveals unexpected limits…
Winter is coming, the roads are getting colder… and “free winter check” promotions are popping up in mailboxes and on garage windows. Among them, the bilan withdraws Euroreparhighly promoted in the Stellantis group’s multi-brand network, promises to check the condition of your car without costing you a cent.
Behind this reassuring promise, many motorists are asking themselves the same question: a simple marketing stunt to fill workshops when it’s cold, or a real good plan for safety and the budget? To see things clearly, we sent a “spy” with a hidden camera into a Eurorepar garage, who carries out this winter assessment like 20 checkpoints. And what emerges from this visit is more nuanced than a simple advertising slogan…
How does a Eurorepar winter assessment really work?
The appointment is obtained quickly, within three days. Once there, the reception is very well established. The receptionist explains: “We are used to carrying out this type of check-up for our clients. Let me save your file. Then, my colleague will take a first tour of the vehicle with you outside…“. Immediately, this first round begins: checking the validity of the technical inspection, condition of the glazing,
take a good look at the tires. Immediate verdict on our Peugeot 208 test: “They are OK at the front, but borderline witness at the rear !“. The workshop manager, who passes by, drives the point home: “Don’t play with fire, they don’t have more than 2000 km left. We’ll check the rest at the workshop“.
On the few meters leading to the workshop, the windshield washer nozzles and wipers are tested. Then it’s a “curtain”: as is often the case, access to the workshop is prohibited to the public, making it impossible to see the checks carried out. Everything then comes down to the debriefing. There, the professional gives a very precise report: “To start, we checked the tire pressure. The brakes are half worn at the rear. At the front, the pads are at 70%, and the discs are good to change.” A diagnosis that our journalists judged to be consistent with the actual condition of the car. The mechanic adds: “Then, you will have to remember to top up the liquids.” On the other hand, the 208 was not allowed to pass over the bridge: no checking of the chassis or the brake fluid, even though these components are at the heart of winter concerns.
The Eurorepar winter report between marketing and good plan
The debriefing continues in the same diligent tone. The garage specifies: “The battery has been tested and is in good condition. Ah, we also spotted a blown headlight bulb. We weren’t going to let you leave with it, so the mechanic replaced it with the one from your kit.” No additional cost for this little attention, the bulb coming from the equipment already present in the car. On the administrative side, the promise is also kept: “We have your contact details, I will send you the quote straight away, by email.“About three hours after leaving the workshop, the quote actually arrived: €658 for the replacement of the front brakes and two tires, an amount that we considered relatively reasonable in view of the work.
However, one oversight is noted: the brake fluid bleeding is not integrated, although it will have to be done. Despite these targeted shortcomings, we give a score of 18 out of 20 to this bilan withdraws Euroreparwelcoming the welcome and the overall seriousness of the controls.
