UK Halts Visas for Afghan Nationals Amid Asylum Seeker Surge

The British government has announced a halt to education visas for nationals from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, and work visas specifically for Afghans, citing a surge in asylum applications and concerns over visa system abuse. The move comes as the UK grapples with managing immigration levels and a rising number of asylum seekers entering the country through various routes.

Visa Restrictions and Asylum Applications

According to a statement from Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, the decision to refuse visas to these nationals seeking to exploit the UK’s generosity is “unprecedented.” The Home Office reported a more than 470 percent increase in asylum applications from students originating from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan between 2021, and 2025. Since 2021, over 135,000 asylum seekers have entered the UK using legal routes .

Broader Context: Immigration and Political Pressure

Migration has develop into a prominent issue in British politics, with the right-leaning Reform UK party gaining traction in opinion polls due to its anti-immigration stance. The government continues to face challenges in controlling the number of compact boats crossing the English Channel from France, carrying undocumented migrants. Simultaneously, there is pressure to reduce the overall number of asylum seekers entering the UK through legal pathways.

Government Efforts to Reduce Asylum Claims

The Home Office stated that it had already reduced student asylum claims by 20 percent in 2025. However, it acknowledged that students arriving on study visas still account for 13 percent of all asylum claims within the system.

Support for Afghan Nationals

Despite the visa restrictions, the UK maintains a commitment to providing refuge for those fleeing war and persecution. The Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) was established in January 2022 to prioritize those who assisted UK efforts in Afghanistan, as well as vulnerable individuals, including women, girls, and minority groups . However, the ACRS is now closed to new referrals. The Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme continues to support Afghan nationals who worked with the UK government .

Current Travel Advice for Afghanistan

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all travel to Afghanistan due to the volatile security situation and heightened tensions with Pakistan . British nationals in Afghanistan face a heightened risk of detention and limited consular support.

As of March 4, 2026, travel insurance may be invalidated if travel occurs against FCDO advice.
