Trump Presses Zelenskyy for Ukrainian Election Amidst Russian Strikes in Odesa

US President Donald Trump has faced scrutiny for his stance on Ukraine, particularly his insistence that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy hold elections amidst an ongoing war fueled by Russia.

During a Tuesday press conference, Trump urged Zelenskyy to organize elections, echoing a key demand from Russian President Vladimir Putin for a peace deal. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had an election,” Trump stated. “That’s not a Russian thing, that’s something coming from me, from other countries.” This statement drew sharp criticism and concern, particularly among European leaders already apprehensive about potential US concessions to Russia.

Zelenskyy Elected in 2019

Zelenskyy was democratically elected in 2019 for a five-year term. His continued leadership has been upheld under martial law declared following the Russian invasion. Trump’s claim that Zelenskyy’s approval rating is “at four percent” is disputed by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), which reports that Zelenskyy’s approval has remained above 50% since the invasion, albeit with some erosion.

Support for Zelenskyy at Home

Borys Filatov, Mayor of the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, directly challenged Trump’s comments, stating, “We may or may not like Zelenskyy. We can scold him or we can praise him. We can condemn his actions or we can applaud them. Because he is OUR President. And not a single lying creature in Moscow, Washington, or anywhere else has the right to open their mouths against him.”

Russian Strikes Target Odesa

This diplomatic tension comes on the heels of Russian strikes on the Southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, targeting civilian infrastructure. Zelenskyy reported that tens of thousands of residents are now without power and heat due to the attacks.

“At least 160,000 Odesa residents are now without heat and electricity,” Zelenskyy stated on social media. He added, “We must remember that Russia is run by pathological liars and cannot be trusted – we must put pressure on them for the sake of peace.”

These events highlight the complexities and escalating tensions surrounding the war in Ukraine.
