Brady Tkachuk Criticizes White House AI-Generated Video Depicting Inflammatory Remarks
Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk has expressed his disapproval of a doctored TikTok video released by the White House that falsely portrayed him making disparaging comments about Canada. The AI-generated video, which has garnered over 11 million views, used altered footage and fabricated audio to suggest Tkachuk made inflammatory remarks following the U.S. Men’s hockey team’s Olympic gold medal win.
AI-Generated Controversy
The video, posted on the White House’s official TikTok account, featured footage from a news conference at the 4 Nations Face Off. With the Team USA goal song “Free Bird” playing in the background, the AI-generated audio made it appear as though Tkachuk said, “They booed our national anthem, so I had to come out and teach those maple syrup eating f—s a lesson.” The clip included a disclaimer stating it was AI-generated media.
Tkachuk addressed the video during a media availability in Ottawa on Thursday, February 26, 2026, stating, “Well, it’s clearly fake, because it’s not my voice, not my lips moving. I’m not in control of any of those accounts. I understand that those words would never come out of my mouth. So, I can’t do anything about it.” He reiterated that the sentiments expressed in the video do not reflect his views.
White House Response and Concerns
The incident has raised concerns about the use of AI to create and disseminate misleading content, particularly from official government accounts. While the White House disclosed the video was AI-generated, critics argue that the disclaimer was insufficient given the video’s widespread reach and potential to cause offense.
Tkachuk’s Reflections on Olympic Experience and Trump’s Comments
Tkachuk also discussed his experience at the Olympics and a call with President Donald Trump following the U.S. Men’s hockey team’s victory. He noted the whirlwind nature of the experience, including a visit to the Oval Office and attendance at the State of the Union address.
He also addressed President Trump’s remarks during the congratulatory call, where Trump joked about needing to invite the women’s team to avoid impeachment. Tkachuk acknowledged that the comments were “caught [him] off guard a little bit” and that he didn’t have an answer when asked why he laughed at them. He highlighted the positive relationship between the men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams, recalling a celebratory gathering after both teams won gold medals.
“You have two gold medalist teams just hanging out before we’re going back to our respective cities,” Tkachuk said. “And it was just great to hear their experience.”
Broader Implications
This incident underscores the growing challenges posed by AI-generated media and the require for increased vigilance in verifying information online. As AI technology continues to advance, the ability to distinguish between authentic and fabricated content will become increasingly crucial.
