The Crew continue to spiral as the regular season nears an end. The latest setback? They fell 2-0 to the Chicago Fire on the road Sept. 27.

Despite the loss, Columbus clinched a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs due to the New York Red Bulls’ 3-2 loss to New York City FC.

In the first half against Chicago, the Crew failed to get a shot off while the Fire had multiple chances to take a lead on goals that were overturned by offside and foul calls.

The only opportunity that stuck was a long shot from forward Andrew Gutman in the 25th minute. That shot hit off the crossbar and right goalpost before crossing the goal line.

Chicago extended its lead in the 70th minute on a counterattack that set up a run for forward Hugo Cuypers. Once Cuypers received a pass, he flicked the ball over goalkeeper Evan Bush.

During the second half, the Crew got off seven shots, just two on goal. Chicago totaled 22 shots for the game.

The Crew were without five regular starters, including striker Wessam Abou Ali and forward Diego Rossi, due to injuries.

Additionally, Crew coach Wilfried Nancy opted to start Bush over Patrick Schulte. Bush recorded six saves.

With their fourth substitution of the game, the Crew replaced defender Yevhen Cheberko with Cesar Ruvalcaba.

Score: Chicago 2-0

Crew midfielder Lassi Lappalainen replaced Andres Herrera in the lineup.

Score: Chicago 2-0
