U.S.-Iran Talks Underway Amidst Escalating Conflict and Troop Deployments

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — President Donald Trump stated for a second day that the U.S. Was in talks with Iran to end the war as diplomatic efforts picked up Tuesday, coinciding with continued airstrikes and Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and regional sites.

Simultaneously, the U.S. Is preparing to deploy at least 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East in the coming days, according to three individuals with knowledge of the plans. This adds to the thousands of Marines already en route to the region.

Iran Denies Negotiations, Delays Strait of Hormuz Decision

Iran has publicly denied any negotiations are taking place. Trump also delayed a self-imposed deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway whose closure has disrupted international shipping and caused fuel prices to skyrocket, threatening the global economy.

Pakistan has offered to host diplomatic talks, but Iran has vowed to continue fighting “until complete victory.”

Challenges to Potential U.S.-Iran Talks

Any talks between the U.S. And Iran would face significant hurdles. Washington’s evolving objectives regarding Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs remain difficult to achieve. The authority of Iranian officials to negotiate is also unclear, particularly after Israel’s recent actions targeting Iranian leaders.

Iran remains wary of the U.S., citing previous instances where attacks occurred during diplomatic talks, including the February 28 strikes that initiated the current conflict.

Troop Deployments and Potential for Further Escalation

The 82nd Airborne Division is the Army’s primary rapid deployment force, capable of quick response. The deployment follows announcements of thousands of Marines heading to the region aboard Navy ships.

The Marine deployment has fueled speculation about a potential U.S. Attempt to seize Kharg Island, a vital hub for Iran’s oil network. The U.S. Previously bombed the island, targeting its defenses while reportedly leaving oil infrastructure intact. Iran has threatened to mine the Gulf if a U.S. Landing appears imminent.

Trump indicated he would postpone a threat to bomb Iranian power stations while talks progress, potentially to allow time for troop deployments. However, analysts suggest this could also be a strategic move to find an exit strategy.

Pakistan Offers to Facilitate Talks

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated Pakistan is prepared to “facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks” to end the war. The U.S. Has reportedly agreed in principle to participate, with talks potentially occurring early next week.

Special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance are expected to represent the U.S., according to Trump.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has been in discussions with counterparts, but Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, denied Trump’s claim of direct talks, and an Iranian military spokesperson affirmed the continuation of fighting.

Regional Impacts and Ongoing Conflict

Israel has conducted strikes on Iranian “production sites,” while Iran has launched missile attacks on Israel. A Moroccan civilian contractor working with the UAE armed forces was killed in Bahrain during an Iranian attack. Kuwait experienced partial power outages due to air defense shrapnel. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting Iranian drones targeting its oil-rich Eastern Province.

Israel also struck Beirut’s southern suburbs, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure. Lebanon has declared Iran’s ambassador persona non grata and ordered their departure by Sunday, banning Iranian flights due to concerns about weapons or funding for Hezbollah.

Authorities report over 1,000 deaths in Lebanon and more than 1,500 in Iran. In Israel, 16 people have been killed, along with at least 13 U.S. Military members and over a dozen civilians in the occupied West Bank and Gulf Arab states.
