Jakarta Flooding: Governor Pramono Anung Points to Runoff from Tangerang Selatan

Jakarta is grappling with significant flooding, with water levels reaching 1.5 meters in some areas as of Friday, February 20, 2026. Governor Pramono Anung has identified a key contributing factor: substantial water runoff originating from Tangerang Selatan (Tangsel).

Causes of the Flooding

Governor Pramono Anung stated that the current flooding situation is a result of both high rainfall and the influx of water from Tangsel. “So earlier I communicated with the Head of the Water Resources Service. What is currently happening in Jakarta is because of the high rainfall above, especially in the Tangerang area, South Tangerang, some of the water is starting to enter Jakarta,” Pramono explained to journalists in South Jakarta according to DetikNews.

The runoff from Tangsel is exacerbating the flooding in Jakarta, leading to widespread inundation. However, the Jakarta Provincial Government is actively working to mitigate the effects.

Government Response

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has deployed water pumps to address the flooding and is coordinating with various agencies, including the Water Resources Service, Highways Service, and Fire and Disaster Management Service (Gulkarmat). These efforts are being carried out in collaboration with local village and sub-district heads. As reported by DetikNews, the government is also preparing basic necessities for those affected by the floods.

Governor Pramono expressed optimism that the water levels would recede quickly, noting that the sea is not currently experiencing high tides, which would facilitate drainage. “But we have prepared a pump, and hopefully it won’t last long because it just so happens that the sea is not experiencing tidal waves, so the water can quickly go down,” he said.

Current Situation

As of Friday evening, February 20, 2026, the Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that 127 RTs (neighborhood units) and 6 roads remain flooded. BPBD Jakarta data indicates that South Jakarta is the most affected area, with water depths varying from 30 to 125 centimeters.

Pramono Anung’s Governorship

Pramono Anung assumed office as the 15th Governor of Jakarta on February 20, 2025, following a career in Indonesian politics that included serving as Cabinet Secretary from 2015 to 2024 and as a member of the House of Representatives. According to Wikipedia, he is a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
