Jakarta Driver Arrested After Reckless High-Speed Chase on Gunung Sahari
A 24-year-old man, identified only by his initials HM, was arrested on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, after leading police on a reckless, high-speed chase through the streets of Central Jakarta. The driver of a black Toyota Calya was observed driving erratically and against traffic on Jalan Gunung Sahari, ultimately colliding with other vehicles and prompting intervention from authorities and concerned citizens.
The Incident Unfolds
According to Kapolres Metro Jakarta Pusat, Kombes Pol Reynold Hutagalung, the incident began when the Toyota Calya was traveling south on Jalan Gunung Sahari near the Lapangan Banteng bus stop. Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop and continued driving south, even proceeding against the flow of traffic.
The vehicle then made a series of turns, traveling on Jalan Gunung Sahari IV, Jalan Bungur Besar Raya, and Jalan Gn Sahari V, repeatedly driving against traffic. The chase continued onto Jalan DR Sutomo before the driver briefly reversed direction near Hotel Bintang Baru and returned to Simpang TL MBAL. Finally, the vehicle was stopped by residents and police at Simpang Empat TL Pintu Besi. Republika reports.
Vehicle and Driver in Custody
The Toyota Calya, bearing license plate number D 1640 AHB, has been impounded as evidence. Both the driver, HM, and another occupant of the vehicle are currently in police custody.
Underlying Causes and Concerns
The incident is the latest in a series of reckless driving incidents involving LCGC (Low Cost Green Car) drivers in Jakarta. Authorities are investigating whether the driver’s actions were linked to the discovery of weapons and multiple license plates inside the vehicle. Metrotvnews reports that police found four sets of license plates, a toy gun, and two bladed weapons (a golok and a badik) in the car.
Driving safety practitioner Sony Susmana, Director of Training Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), suggests that some LCGC drivers may be new to driving four-wheeled vehicles and are carrying over unsafe habits learned while riding motorcycles. He emphasizes the importance of developing driving ethics, understanding traffic rules, and continuous learning. Wartakota
Ongoing Investigation
The case is now being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Unit (Reskrim) of the Metro Jakarta Pusat Police to determine if any other criminal offenses were committed.
