Diploma Accusations Against President Jokowi Now Under Formal Examination
Jakarta – The Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) has escalated the case concerning allegations of a fabricated diploma leveled against President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to the investigation phase. This development follows a report filed by President Jokowi himself, prompting a formal inquiry into the claims.
The move has been welcomed by Pro-Jokowi Volunteers (Projo), a support group for the President. Freddy Alex Damanik, Deputy Secretary-General of Projo, expressed confidence in the police’s decision. “We commend the investigators at Polda Metro Jaya for advancing President jokowi’s report against Roy Suryo adn others regarding alleged defamation and slander to a full investigation,” damanik stated. “We’ve maintained from the outset that these accusations warranted scrutiny, and we anticipate that Roy Suryo and his associates will ultimately be named as suspects.”
Evidence Presented and Investigative Focus
According to reports,President Jokowi has provided his original diploma to authorities as evidence. The police are currently focused on verifying the authenticity of the document and gathering corroborating evidence. This includes examining academic records and possibly interviewing individuals connected to President Jokowi’s educational history.
The case highlights a growing trend of online disinformation and its potential impact on public figures. A recent study by the Indonesian internet Service Providers Association (APJII) revealed that nearly 73% of Indonesian internet users have encountered hoaxes or misleading details online, with political figures being frequent targets. This underscores the importance of swift and decisive action in addressing such allegations.
The Stakes of Defamation in the Digital Age
Defamation, whether through customary media or online platforms, carries notable legal consequences in Indonesia.Under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE), individuals found guilty of spreading false information that harms another’s reputation can face imprisonment and substantial fines. The investigation into these accusations serves as a reminder of the legal boundaries surrounding freedom of speech and the responsibility that comes with online expression.
The police’s decision to upgrade the case to the investigation stage signals a serious commitment to addressing the allegations and upholding the President’s reputation. As the investigation progresses, further details are expected to emerge, potentially leading to formal charges and a legal battle over the veracity of the claims.
